Could the next PlayStation be called The PlayStation Orbis? According to a report by Kotaku, the Orbis could be our next Sony system or, at least, the codename for the system.
The name was leaked by “a reliable source who is not authorized to talk publicly about next-gen hardware but has shared correct information with (KOTAKU) before.” Of Course Sony is neither confirming or denying the name, but instead citing their policy not to comment on such speculation.
As of now the PlayStation Orbis is only a rumor, much like our hope of the PlayStation 4 of last year. However the rumor also states that we are looking for a 2013 Holiday season launch, maybe even sooner. I guess we will wait and see.
Another interesting point that Kotaku brought up is the name Orbis. In Latin, Orbis means circle. Vita (PlayStation Vita) means Life. If you combine the two names, Orbis Vita, you get “Circle of Life” in Latin. Could this mean that they plan on Bringing new life to the system, or is this just some sort of Jedi mind trick used to troll the fanboys? Either way, with the Circle of Life reference, we better get an epic Lion King game, and the start up screen should show Rafiki holding up the system with “Nants ingonyama bagithi baba” playing proudly in the background!
It appears as though a few specs were also leaked:
- AMD x64 CPU
- AMD Southern Islands GPU
The AMD x64 CPU has been rumored before, but the GPU is pretty impressive. We could see a system capable of a resolution of 4096×2160, as well as 3D game capabilites in 1080p!
Of course with the good, there is always the bad. The Source stated that the Orbis will not be capable of playing PS3 games. So, I would guess that the lifespan of the PS3 will overlap with the Orbis. It also looks like there will be some sort of software that will prevent a user from playing used games, or at least limit what a player can achieve. I am not a fan of them trying to move away from pre-owned games. It worries me that used games have become a target. There are many people out there that cannot afford $50-$60 on a new game, let alone a brand new (or used) system. I feel that we are reaching a sad day in gaming history.
Do you have any thoughts about the proposed name and/or rumors?
