It seems like Sony is refusing to give up the fight against the Wii U. They have already announced plans to team up the vita with the PS3 to create a loose interpretation of the Wii U gamepad. Now, Sony has decided to release a new PS3, possibly before the launch of the Wii U.
The new slimmer, lighter, and smaller PS3 will come with either a 250 GB or 500 GB hard drive. It is expected to launch in late September. Japan will see a white version in November, there is no word if the US will see the white version here. Europe and Hong Kong will also see an inexpensive version with 12 GB of flash storage.
Some of the features of the new model are:
- Sliding disk cover
- 2 USB 2.0 ports
- Ethernet
- 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi
- Bluetooth 2.0
- 1 HDMI Out
- Maximum 1080p Output
- 4.63 lbs (current model is 7lbs.)
The 250 GB version of the system is scheduled to sell for $270.00, on September 25th, and will include the “game of the year” edition of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Buyers will also receive a $30.00 voucher towards bonus content for the game “DUST”. The 500GB Version will be $300.00 and include Assassin’s Creed III. A Vertical stand can be bought separately for $15.00. The 500GB model can be pre-ordered at Gamestop now.
How will the re-re-release of the console hurt sales of the Wii U? I am not sure that they will. Sure, some Sony fans will opt to finally upgrade to the PS3, others will opt for the larger hard drive. However, buying an existing system that essentially bought a new wardrobe, compared to a system that just got full body plastic surgery, just seems like a waste.
